Update
22nd
September 2011
Nothing of note has taken place since the last update in April, save the
Lodge reconvened on Thursday 22nd September for the 2011/12 season.
A lively meeting took place when two invited Brethren delivered in a
most excellent and commendable manner two Masonic Lectures which are
rarely seen.
One of the Brethren, who is relatively new to “The Craft”, conducted
himself in an exemplary manner belying his relative youth.
A
“daily advancement in Masonic knowledge” was received by all with
acclamation.
28th April 2011
At
the Regular Meeting held on Thursday 28th April, five
“Gentlemen” who were past pupils of schools within the King Edward's
Foundation, were invited to join the proceedings after the normal Lodge
business had been concluded. They were enthralled by both the
welcome they received from the Brethren of the lodge and the inspiring,
informative and enlightening presentation about the origins, aims and
ambitions of Freemasonry delivered by Very Worshipful Brother Alan J
Wellan, the Deputy Provincial Grand Master for the Masonic Province of
Warwickshire, and also the current Worshipful Master of The Birmingham
Old Edwardian Lodge, No.7115.
Following a lively question and answer session at the conclusion of the
presentation, the guests then joined the members of the Lodge, and other
Brethren invited for the evening, at the “Festive Board” where the
lively discussion continued throughout the sumptuous three-course dinner
with plentiful libation!
From the typical Masonic convivial companionship evident during the
evening, it is to be hoped that these guests will consider joining the
Order and, of course, The Birmingham Old Edwardian Lodge.
Membership is open to Staff and former pupils of King Edward's
Foundation Schools over the age of 21, although in exceptional
circumstances a Dispensation maybe considered from applicants who are 18
or over.

always available to discuss informally aspects of Freemasonry and show
you around the magnificent headquarters of the Masonic Province of
Warwickshire in Edgbaston, where not only many Lodges hold their
meetings, but the building is also an exceptional Conference and
Banqueting Centre.

Of Interest
Many
of you reading this report will have seen and marvelled, not only the film,
but the exceptional performances of all the actors in “The Kings Speech.”
What is of great disappointment to Freemasonry is that no mention was made,
or even alluded to, of the immense contribution that King George VI not only
made to Freemasonry, but also the enjoyment and pride that he derived from
being a member, and his love for the Order. Furthermore, Lionel Logue,
the King’s speech therapist, and also lifelong close friend, was also an
enthusiastic Freemason. He was speech therapist to the Royal Masonic
School.
King
George believed that Freemasonry helped him overcome his speech disability
whenever he performed Masonic ritual. He became a most dedicated and
active Freemason, but protocol dictated that he had to relinquish his
Masonic affiliations when he became King. Especially for him, the
Masonic Rank of Past Grand Master was created, when he declared, “today the
pinnacle of my Masonic life has been reached.”
Both King George’s grandfather, King Edward VII, and his brother, Edward
VIII were members of the Order.
Because Freemasonry had played such an important role, and had such a strong
influence on King George’s life, a postage stamp filled with Masonic
symbolism was created as part of the 1946 Victory Issue.
The 3d
stamp (3 pence in pre-decimal currency, 1¼ p in present currency) The
stamp’s intention was to depict and proclaim victory over evil and express
compassion and hope.

FREEMASONRY IN WARWICKSHIRE AND A LINK WITH BIRMINGHAM OLD EDWARDIANS
Have you ever been tempted
to discover more about Freemasonry and wondered how to go about it? Have
you perhaps thought that you should not ask a question but must wait for
someone to speak with you?
If the answers to these questions is 'yes' then be assured you are not
alone in holding such views, many Masons had a latent interest for years
before they eventually sought to discuss the subject. At one time
discussion was difficult, there was not much openness, but that is far from
true today, questions will be answered.
Freemasonry is an organisation that attracts men who seek friendship with
likeminded people, who feel that there is more to life than looking after
their own interests, who wish to join with others in sharing an enjoyable
hobby and have a desire to be involved in charitable activities. But, very
importantly, also have a desire to relax from work pressures and have the
pleasure of being involved in thought provoking and structured activities in
a dignified, but not stuffy, atmosphere. Freemasonry is fun!
In Warwickshire there are over 4,500 Freemasons and in the United Grand
Lodge of England 350,000. Royalty, clergy of many denominations, statesmen,
explorers, lawyers, judges, industrialists, doctors and surgeons all enjoy
the Craft, it appeals to all. The Grand Master is HRH The Duke of Kent and
the United Grand Lodge of England is almost 300 years old.
In the Masonic Province of Warwickshire there are 190 Lodges, a Lodge
being a ‘branch’ of the ‘club’. Many are linked to a profession or an
institution and one is The Birmingham Old Edwardian Lodge, open to men who
were students at one of the schools of the Birmingham King Edward’s
Foundation.
The Lodge meets at the Masonic Building in Stirling Road, facing on to
Hagley Road in Edgbaston, a large and most interesting building.
If you would like to learn more about Masonry in general and The
Birmingham Old Edwardian Lodge in particular, no strings attached then please contact Michael Spencer on e-mail address
mikeoptom55@yahoo.co.uk. He will give you more information. You will receive a very warm welcome.
