The History of The Lodge

Obverse of Edward VI hammered six pence in fine silverThe Lodge was consecrated in the Masonic Province of Warwickshire on Friday 7th September 1951 in Big School with twenty-six founder members.

The Lodge continued to meet in
Big School until 1999, and then met at the Walker Hall in Ampton Road, Edgbaston until the summer of 2008, when it moved to Stirling Road.

The Lodge may only be 60 years old this year, but its roots go back much further.  You can have a look at the Lodge's Family Tree here

  The Lodge Today

The Birmingham Old Edwardian Lodge bannerAlthough the original intention was that membership of the Lodge should be confined to Old Edwardians and Masters at the School, Freemasonry is universal and therefore the area of recruitment has been widened to include anyone who has a connection with the School itself or indeed any of the Schools in the Foundation.

The Lodge currently has a membership of 26 , two of them being Honorary Members, Right  Worshipful Brother Michael J Price CBE, Past Provincial Grand Master of Warwickshire, who is a Foundation Governor, and Right Worshipful Brother Barrie M Cooper JP, Past Provincial Grand Master for Worcestershire and an Old Boy of the School.

The Deputy Provincial Grand Master of Warwickshire, Very Worshipful Bro Alan J Wellan, is the newly Invested Worshipful Master and Very Worshipful Bro Richard B W Price, Past Grand Superintendent  of the Royal Arch Province of Worcestershire, the newly Invested Senior Warden of the Lodge.  To add to the geographical spread, we have W Bro Donald S Beere, Past Assistant Provincial Grand Master of Staffordshire.

Mention must also be made of W Bro Robert G Russell who is a Past Provincial Grand Master of Mark and W Bro Peter J Turner who is Inspector General of Rose Croix.

The mix of Masonic experience, professions and backgrounds creates the warm and friendly atmosphere for which the Lodge is well known; in true Masonic style, whatever their status in life or in Masonry, all are Brothers who welcome new members and visitors.

The Lodge meets on the 4th Thursday in September, October, February and April and on the 1st Thursday in December.  Any Mason who would like to visit will be warmly welcomed.  We would be delighted to be contacted by any Mason who would like to become a joining member of his Old School Lodge in addition to his own Lodge.  And if you're not yet a Mason but are interested in Freemasonry and would like to know more about it, please contact Alan Wellan by email
here or by telephone on 01926 842828.
